Hannah MacKenzie-Margulies (she/her) is a multidisciplinary dancer, choreographer, and movement educator based in Minneapolis. Her practice engages with a range of techniques and traditions including classical ballet, western contemporary dance, Yiddish dance, and authentic jazz/lindy hop. A native of Lexington, Massachusetts, Hannah received her early training at the Lexington School of Ballet and the Boston Ballet School before attending the Joffrey Ballet School of New York’s post-graduate trainee program. She holds a BA in dance and music from Reed College and has participated in workshops at the School of Jacob’s Pillow, the Banff Center, Orsolina 28, and beyond.
Over the course over her career, Hannah has performed with a variety of ensembles including the Harford Ballet, Charleston Ballet Theatre, and sub.set dance, as well as in projects led by Carla Mann, Becca Cerra, Kevin Clark, and Helen Hatch (Hatch Dance)/Berit Ahlgren (HoneyWorks). She is the co-champion of the infamous 2013 Lindy Focus Al and Leon Partnered Solo Jazz contest and has placed at numerous national and international competitions including Camp Jitterbug, Lindy Bout, Stompology, and the Canadian Swing Championships.
Hannah previously served as the education coordinator for the 9:20 Special, San Francisco’s longest running weekly lindy hop dance and has taught at workshops and festivals across the country and around the world. As a choreographer, Hannah has been commissioned by Ballet Co.Laboratory, Threads Dance Project, and Rhythmically Speaking, and supported by the Foundation for Contemporary Arts, the Minnesota State Arts Board, and the Everwood Farmstead Foundation. Her work has been presented at the Walker Art Center, Southern Theater, Park Square Theatre, Barnstorm Dance Festival, Midwest RADfest, ODC’s Studio B, and more.
